The Pros and Cons of Modeling Conventions
by Damie Green

You’ve heard the radio announcements- “Here comes your big break!” Every couple of months there is a modeling and talent convention gearing up, organizing, promising would-be hopefuls fame and fortune. They offer an “easy” way into the industry- a chance to meet many agencies in person all at the same time.

It happens. You CAN meet the right people at a convention. If the timing is right you can even sign a contract with talent representation right there on the spot. Boom! Your career has begun! My career began at a large modeling and talent convention and I have had enough success to say that the convention I attended was absolutely worth it.

The problem is there are many different types and sizes of conventions. More often than not they can be just a system set up to take your money. When considering a talent convention for your next career move, you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons and view the facts so that you can make an educated intelligent decision. This possible adventure could catapult your career or it could force your family to put a second mortgage on your home. I’ve seen both.

Modeling and talent conventions have launched the careers of many stars. For example, Katie Holmes booked her manager through a meeting at a modeling convention. However, the amount of chance of that happening for YOU is directly proportionate to the size of the convention (among other factors). Normally local smaller conventions are much cheaper but offer a small list of agencies attending. Larger national or international conventions can cost significantly more but give the chance to meet hundreds of the biggest agencies in the world. If considering a modeling convention, first look to see the number of agencies there and research their names, making sure that you are getting the most out of your dollar.

Large conventions usually take place in huge fancy hotels in big cities, such as the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. If you are from a smaller town, or even just a town far away from the major entertainment meccas, it can be more difficult to get your career started. If you go to a convention, you’ve got all those agencies under the same roof, and you’re getting to meet them in a fun environment with a sophisticated atmosphere. It can be very exciting for someone who isn’t used to that sort of thing.
